Getting to Know our UltraTeam: A Personal Interview with Functional Nutritionist Maggie Ward

What sparked your initial desire to pursue and practice Functional Medicine?

I’ve been interested in nutrition since I was in high school and began to run competitively. Then, when I researched graduate schools, I came upon Bastyr University and found the Nutrition program for me, where in addition to the biochemistry they really teach you to use food as medicine.

How would you define living an UltraLife?

Doing what you love and feel passionate about, and finding balance between work, family and taking care of yourself.

What is your morning routine?

I meditate for 30 minutes every morning. If I have time I may go for a run, otherwise I make breakfast for me and my daughter and then head to work.

Favorites + Firsts:

  • Favorite movie? Chariots of Fire
  • First concert? The Monkees
  • Favorite Indulgence? A massage!
  • Favorite way to relax? Watch a fun movie
  • Favorite Podcast? Used to be Functional Medicine Update with Jeff Bland- I still go back to listen to them!  I also like the 15 minute Matrix.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your position at UWC?

There are two.  I work with a great team of human beings who love what they do and respect each other. I also love sitting down and connecting with our patients and working with them to find their path to wellness.

Tell us about your most rewarding case study.

Hmmm…that’s a tough one. I have two that stand out. A middle aged woman with Type 2 diabetes that was able to come off of her meds and normalize her blood sugar within 2 weeks of being on her diet plan. And a 5-year-old boy with Autism whose diagnosis was reversed within 6 months of his treatment plan with us.

If you had to choose one life mantra that consistently strikes a chord with you, what would it be?

BE in the moment!

Your biggest goal for 2019?

To do more for the environmental nutrition movement and help heal our planet!
